An insurance broker has played a crucial role for the Serlachius Museums over the years

For several years, the esteemed Serlachius Museums have entrusted their insurance coverage to Söderberg & Partners. These museums, located in Finland, hold a special place in the hearts of art enthusiasts. Collaborating with them has been a delightful experience.

The Serlachius Museums, comprising the Gösta and Gustaf sites in Mänttä-Vilppula, form a cohesive museum complex. Beyond their artistic treasures, the Gösta museum’s premises also house a fine dining restaurant operated by a third-party entrepreneur. Additionally, an artist residence graces the museum grounds.

Under an ongoing insurance management agreement, Söderberg & Partners ensures that the museums’ insurance coverage remains up-to-date and meticulously reviewed. Given the inherent value of artworks, precautions related to transport, storage, and handling are paramount.

According to Juha Roponen, Chief Financial Officer of Serlachius Museums, “While some artworks fall under our comprehensive insurance, we also maintain separate policies for exhibitions and specific pieces.”

Unveiling Monet’s Authenticity Through Science

Among the Serlachius Museums’ renowned artworks is Claude Monet’s “Haystack in the Evening Sun”. This valuable masterpiece has graced the Serlachius Fine Arts Foundation’s collection since the late 1950s. Interestingly, the painting lacks a visible signature, leaving its authenticity in question until 2015.

Enter the University of Jyväskylä’s hyperspectral camera, which peeled back layers of mystery. Beneath the paint, Monet’s name and the year 1891 emerged. Further analyses of pigments and fibers confirmed the painting’s genuine origin.

Roponen reflects, “Until now, the appropriate technology hadn’t been developed to definitively prove the painting’s authenticity.”

Crossing Borders for Insurance Coverage

Navigating the art world often requires seeking insurance coverage beyond national boundaries. Serlachius Museums, recognizing this challenge, has secured insurance from countries like Norway through Söderberg & Partners’ international network. In addition to artworks and exhibitions, the museums have also insured their historical properties in Mänttä.

The cooperative relationship between Serlachius Museums and their insurance broker has stood the test of time. Markku Rantanen, the dedicated contact person, encourages everyone to visit these remarkable cultural sites.
